this is how we roll...
Smith Sick-House-style.
So how does one survive 3 weeks of illness in a 1000 sq. ft. home with constant rain?
This is how we do it.
We danced…ALOT
Thankfully, revival is breaking out at IHOP so we had lots of good dance material every morning :)
We sewed…ALOT
The boys call my sewing machine, my “Mighty Machine”, which makes it seem way cooler. They helped with these bags for their beloved matchbox cars that always seem to go missing.
Making our Christmas banner
The blasted banner patches
We bundled up and forced ourselves to be in nature
Just say no to tissues
We got creative
Laundry bins make perfect jail cells…
...and blanket piles make great napping spots
We couch-jumped
Into piles of blankets and pillows. Never fails to entertain for an entire day. It’s amazing how exuberance for something helps you endure lots of bumps and bruises along the way. I lost count of how many banged heads/bumped shins we tallyed. But they never seemed to care, just hopped back up and did it again. Hmm, a gospel-lesson in the making right there.
Levi beat up our furniture
He took out his pent up energy on the bookshelf, the rocking chair and his brothers head. Two black eyes and a banged up nose. That’s what cabin fever will do to a toddler.
I made lots of messes
Baking, sewing, organizing and reorganizing (even the medicine cabinet, now THAT is desperation, people). But you do what you gotta do to maintain the sanity.
I finally came up with a solution for the giant black hole, known as my purse, that refuses to produce my phone and wallet unless I empty the entire contents on the counter.
This handy little pouch (felt leftover from Christmas banner) now keeps my phone and wallet (1) together forever, (2) safe from leaky sippy cups and capless pens and (3) in a perfect fuzzy pouch that I can located with one blind grab into the black hole. Awesome.
We are finally all on the mend now and will hopefully breath some fresh air and explore our favorite spots around town again this week. At least before my parents arrive on Thursday from London for the Christmas festivities to begin! Which, for us Halls, mainly means eating a lot.

I love the Christmas Banner. Are those Jesse Tree patches? Or something else? I’m trying to make an advent calender-type thing and maybe some Jesse tree style ornaments…. for next year. Since it’s a little late for this year. I’m glad you survived the sickness.

People keep asking me if they’re Jesse tree patches…what is a Jesse tree? Maybe they are, I’m not sure :) It’s from a book my family used growing up called “Family Celebrations”. Where each patch represents the lesson from that night. It took a lot longer than I’d anticipated, but hopefully it’ll last through the years :)

Jesse Tree is a similar sort of idea where every day of advent you put a symbol on the tree that tells part of the story of Jesus. I guess it starts in the old testament – so it’s symbols like a ladder (for jacob’s dream), two stone tablets (ten commandments), etc. So you read scripture and put the little symbol on the tree. I’d like to make one with maybe some felt ornaments, but it just hasn’t gotten done yet. Yours really looks great!
