the running theme

...in our household this fall/winter has been sickness. Quite literally, “running”. Running noses, running faucets of water refilling those water bottles to keep flushing out the nasty germs, running bathtubs and showers to soothe colicky coughs and aching little bodies.

Matthew and I had succeeded in avoiding this theme until we were joined by the likes of a small, illness-magnet a year and a half ago. I knew kids got sick a lot, but this seems ridiculous. It’s felt as if all we’ve gotten in the past six months is a break of a week or two before the next happening virus decides to come hang out at our home, usually in poor little B’s body. He’s a popular guy with the germs these days.

This latest bout is one of the worst that’s hit Brighton as of yet. His nose is constantly flowing, his cough brings on tears and panic as he tries to navigate the mucus out of his throat, and his sleep is less than restful. Sending any hopes of a speedy recouperation period down the drain. Tonight he sat puffy-eyed and zoned in his highchair looking as if he was strung out on a cocktail of various drugs. If it wasn’t so pathetic, we would have taken a picture for memories sake.

So consistant, restful sleep is still a lofty vision in our minds these days. We’re hoping once B recouperates we’ll all get a good 7-8 hour chunk at night to prepare us for minismith #2’s arrival here in a few weeks. Until then, we’ll be rotating in and out of the rocking chair shift throughout the night. Trying to help B, when he’s at his worse, stay upright long enough to let the snot drain and fall asleep a little deeper.

So sorry AC-

We are riding the sickness train right now too. It’s tough for the kids, tough for the parents. But at least the kids can rest:). Hoping and knowing that you WILL make it through the night shift tonight.

Love,
Maryanne

I am Amy Smith

Amy Smith and Family including Matthew, Brighton, and Levi

I’m a mother of two, wife to Matthew, daughter of the King, and fervent believer in the healing power of bluegrass music.

I now live in the great city of Greenville, SC, leaving behind Philadelphia, the city where Matthew and I fell in love and saw our two boys come in to the world.

Our recent move from north to south has begun the next chapter in the life of the Smith clan, possibly the most trying and difficult as of yet…learning to become true southerners.
