the new soaps

It’s a sad fact that for myself, and I’m gathering for other SAHM’s out there, that the new “soaps” for moms are blog feeds. And a third cup of steaming hot coffee at 2pm nap time is the new bon-bon. Well, that last one is speaking for myself.

I could spend hours browsing my hundreds of feeds to design sites, mom-blogs, fashion tallies. It is dangerous, people.

If not reigned in, I could see myself huddled in the den corner wrapped in a blanket with my bedhead and stale pjs, yelling at the boys to leave me alone and get themselves their own cheerios for breakfast…and lunch…possibly dinner.

There are just too many beautiful sites out there. My biggest weakness is for the ever-newly-popping up hoards of modern interior design sites (thanks to marrying an incredibly talented and influential design freak) and (gulp, don’t judge me) fashion trends.

I don’t know what it is about seeing some gorgeously put together outfits (ahh, and MORE outfits), the cutest summer tote or the perfect fall shoe (please someone buy these for me!!) that just makes me giddy. Not that I can afford any of this stuff, but it’s great fun drooling. I blaim it on my mom who toted us around to thrift store after thrift store in the early 90s, teaching us girls the art of discovering our own style buried in the dusty racks and bins. This is where, at a young age, I learned to adore accessories and use them to my advantage, giving my otherwise cheap outfits a little oomph. Cause you know, ladies, my scarf always needed to match my layered 80’s socks and big hoop earrings. For these trips, Mom, I am eternally grateful :)

I digress. So I’m learning to limit my roaming time, as I have to limit the boys tv time. An hour a day during their nap time. Yeh, I know, it’s sad. I need boundaries too, folks.

Here are some of my latest favorite reads:

Just for fun, mom-blogs

Not necessarily “mommy-blogs” which I have a hard time getting in to, just bloggers who are hilarious and also happen to have kids.

Mama Smith – I am inspired to write posts for the style observer because of women like you. Thanks for the include on your blog post and keep writing great stuff. If there’s something that inspires you and we can write about it, please let me know. All the best, Jean

Amy- When I saw the title “the-new-soaps” the first thing that popped into my head was Waking Ned Divine. Remember the pigs and “the soaps?” Anyway, I talked to Matthew a couple days ago and it looks like I’ll get to stay w/ you guys for a night or two in August… before the beer hunt! See you soon.

I’m a mother of two, wife to Matthew, daughter of the King, and fervent believer in the healing power of bluegrass music.

I now live in the great city of Greenville, SC, leaving behind Philadelphia, the city where Matthew and I fell in love and saw our two boys come in to the world.

Our recent move from north to south has begun the next chapter in the life of the Smith clan, possibly the most trying and difficult as of yet…learning to become true southerners.
