the big guns

That’s right, folks. I’m having to bring out the big guns. In our kitchen, none the less. The big guns for me being actually having to be creative about preparing food for the kiddos as opposed to my typical routine of tossing whatever is left in the fridge at them.

Brighton has not just become a picky eater, but he has become a full-fledged no-eater. It doesn’t matter what it is, how kid-friendly it might be or how carefully and lovingly it was prepared. He wants nothing but handles of goldfish crackers throughout the day.

While we ignored this for awhile it’s beginning to take it’s toll on his “daily duties” in the bathroom. So out come the big guns. And it’s working. Our child once again eats.

Morning breakfast now consists of smoothies, which Brighton refers to as smoothie ice creams. If he thinks he’s downing ice cream filled with fruit, spinach and protein powder, all the better.

The boys love ‘em. We love ‘em. Everyone’s getting their greens and fruits. And there’s nothing spinachy looking about them. Win win.

Lunches include some sort of kebab with the sharp ended pounded on the counter until it’s nice and dull. Hot dog pieces and cooked carrots. Cheese sticks and strawberries. Cheese tortillas and broccoli chunks. I believe the mere fact that this type of eating involves a spear and ripping the food off it with his mouth makes him quickly forget he’s actually eating until it’s too late.

So far he’s eaten all three meals every day for the past week. Nothing short of miraculous.

Levi, on the other hand, has been deemed “Little Homer” by my dad. He will eat anything and everything all day long if allowed. Including bugs from the window sill, dust balls under the bed and month old food he finds in he couch cushions.

This is the position he assumes most of the day when not eating. Waddling around the house with blankie wrapped around his shoulders and fingers in his mouth.

Any tips from your picky eaters would be much appreciated. I don’t know just how long my creative juices will flow.

We’re off to find something fun to do, so the boys don’t remain here…

...all day long. Now that Kai is housebroken, I’m hoping I can actually hang out with my friends again instead of having to be home every two hours. I miss them.

Miss you friend! I’ve become such a bad post-commenter since Google Reader. Anyways, love the pics. We were praying for you and your fam at breakfast today. The boys are so cute. So, what breakfast shake are y’all drinking? I’m so excited that we’re getting a Trader Joe’s close by — makes me think of you. Wish you were closer . . . enjoy the sunshine!

love the kebab idea. i’ll have to steal that. never underestimate the power of “dip.” anything semi-liquid can be turned into a dip and convince our kiddo that it is an excellent sauce. plain yogurt for pasta actually worked the other day…

I think you’re pretty creative in the food dept., but remember, as soon as you think you have figured out what to feed them, their tastes will change. My mantra: “This is only a stage. This is only a stage.”

My oldest subsisted entirely on instant oatmeal last summer. For the last few months he has insisted on eating only provolone slices. He’s always refused typical kid foods like grilled cheese, mac & cheese, and cheese tortillas but loves bell peppers and feta. Go figure!
