road kill

The other morning, Brighton had his first experience with loosing a friend after finding him smashed in the alleyway behind our house. Trevor the Tractor. His little pocket buddy. He used to carry him everywhere. Somehow he’d been left behind on one of our trips from the car and had a nasty encountered with a large vehicle late in the night. As you can see above, B was pretty devestated.

When I saw him laying there, I tried to distract Brighton. Which, as we all know, never works with kids. He immediately ran to him and tried to repair his wheels to no avail. There’s a hilariously sad montage of the experience on my flickr site here.

rain play

Brighton and I have been enjoying the thunderous, impromtu summer showers. We couldn’t resist the downpour a few days ago that turned our side yard into a flowing river.

B obviously enjoyed himself. Trying to express to Matthew above just how much fun he missed out on.

osaka

Last night we headed out for sushi with Matt and Marcie. Three hours later we were filled to the brim with a vast array of incredible sushi rolls, a couple kiwi mojitos and some unfiltered sake. They floored us by picking up the entire tab. We are seriously going to miss these guys. Not just because they buy us crazy good sushi, but mainly because they’ve become some of our closest friends here in Philly. Always making us laugh and forget we’re parents for awhile.

new toes

Every time I paint my toes, Brighton remarks “Pretty. New toes, Mama. Pretty new toes”. So when he stuck his foot out to me the other day for “new toes” himself, I couldn’t resist. I did stop when he wanted me to give Levi new toes though. So give me credit for that, Matthew :) We did removed the hot pink polish today though after the weird vibes of seeing our rambunctious boy tip-toeing around with his dainty little feet.

premiere

I’ve been working on a few projects here and there, never really completing much. I did finally wrap up this tank I’d started a few weeks ago. I’m wishing I had more of that Alexander Henry fabric now. I think it’ll be my token item to launch the etsy shop Matthew and I are going to set up. Before the “grand opening”, I’m hoping to work on a few baby boy capris and maybe a few girl skirts. It’s hard to work up the energy when my sewing table is in the process of being packed up though. Therefore launching may not take place until the fall.

the remaining crew

The last of the veggie collection was thrown into a stir-fry the other night. Hal’s Special Sauce is my all-time favorite stir-fry recipe. As stir-fry is one of my all-time favorite dishs…ideal of clearing out the fridge and tossing in whatever suits your fancy that night. Ours included the kale from Lizzie which was a new, but much-loved addition that I think we’ll keep around.

Hal’s Special Sauce

1/2 c orange juice (I used pureed pineapple)
1/4 c soy sauce
1 TBSP grated ginger (I used powdered ginger)
2-3 cloves of garlic, minced
1-2 TBSP honey
2 tsp Chinese sesame oil
2 TBSP cornstarch

Whisk together and pour over veggies or whatnot 2/3 of the way through cook time.

Wee-Why

As Brighton has started calling him again. He had formerly dropped this after week 1 of Levi’s arrival in place of “Why-Why”. Now he has become “Wee-Why” again. We’re all enjoying the smiles and laughter of our little wee-why.

Lastly, I’m trying to keep up with my ma.gnolia links on the side again. Check ‘em out. I added a few fun sewing projects. Off to start our new Harry Potter.

In the rain picture: are you wearing the Reefs we bought our freshman year at Half Moon?! Mine lasted until about 2004 (6 years!), but I wore them literally everyday, so I wore a hole in them and they started smellin’ like feet. Oh, and P.S., don’t worry…we don’t have one piece of white wicker furniture and only like one gold frame in our entire Southern house. :)

I’m a mother of two, wife to Matthew, daughter of the King, and fervent believer in the healing power of bluegrass music.

I now live in the great city of Greenville, SC, leaving behind Philadelphia, the city where Matthew and I fell in love and saw our two boys come in to the world.

Our recent move from north to south has begun the next chapter in the life of the Smith clan, possibly the most trying and difficult as of yet…learning to become true southerners.
